WEST END INLAND EMPIRE BLUES

ARTHUR (Art.) PLACENCIA #13742

The West End Inland Empire (WEIE) Blues on June 26, 2025, had their monthly breakfast at the Ontario Elks Lodge. There were 87 (eighty-seven) attendees, and the theme was Honoring the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and the Los Angeles Police Department Honor Guard.

The attendees started with the Pledge of Allegiance and a short prayer for those Blues who went EOW and those that are struggling with health issues.

The group leaders reminded everyone that, as is tradition, during the month of June, the West End Inland Empire Blues collect and donate funds to the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and the LAPD Honor Guard. These two organizations are honored for their incredible service to retirees and their families, particularly during funerals and memorials. Their presence brings a profound sense of respect and solemnity to these occasions.

The folding of the American flag, the poignant sound of "Taps" played on the bugle, and the hauntingly beautiful melody of bagpipes in the background create an atmosphere of reverence. It is not just about their actions but the deeply moving feeling of honor and gratitude they bestow upon the deceased officers. Their dedication inspires all, reminding us of the significance of their role in ensuring that those who have served are remembered with dignity and pride.

The WEIE Blues once again demonstrated their generosity and profound appreciation by donating $2,277, which will be evenly split between the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and the LAPD Honor Guard. These contributions play a vital role in supporting these groups, as the Emerald Society Pipes and Drums rely entirely on donations to their 501(c)(3) charity, while the Los Angeles Police Foundation has recently assumed responsibility for funding the Honor Guard.

Special recognition was given to Honor Guard members Richard Duran #23274 and Vance Bjorklund #21982, who continue to dedicate some of their volunteer time to the WEIE Blues. Their consistent support, including leading the group in the flag salute at prior breakfast’s, is a testament to their commitment and camaraderie. Their presence further highlights the enduring bond and respect shared among those who have served.

The WEIE Blues thank the two associations for all they do for retirees.
